American Institute of Iranian Studies

American Institute of Iranian Studies

American Institute of Iranian Studies (AIIrS) is a non-profit, non-governmental research institute which seeks to support the advancement of knowledge and understanding of Iran and Iranian culture and civilization from the earliest periods to the present. It is an academic consortium, of which the members are universities and museums in North America with interests in the study of Iranian culture and civilization.

History

AIIrS was founded in 1967. From 1969 until late 1979 the institute maintained a center in Tehran with a resident American director, but following the Iranian Revolution, the center was closed.

Current activities

AIIrS has established a six-month research fellowship for a junior faculty member whose recipient represents AIIrS in Iran. The Institute also offers two-month fellowships to graduate students for advanced language study at the Dehkhoda Institute in Tehran; two-to-four-week fellowships to senior scholars to help them become reacquainted with current research resources in Iran; and a one-month fellowship for a scholar to serve as bibliographer investigating the history of research in Iran since 1979.
