The geographical designations which may be applied to spirits are defined in the
Regulation laying down general rules on the definition, description and presentation of spirit drinks (No 1576/89),ref|1576-89 as amended by the two Acts of Accession which have enlarged the European Union since 1989.ref|access1ref|access2

Designations marked with an asterisk may be associated with qualifying phrases: see articles for more details.
