Perelada

Perelada

Perelada is the most northeasterly portion of Spain.

Located on the French border where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean Sea, a large portion is now part of a national park.

Historically the region was part of the Marca Hispanica after being conquered by Frankish forces in the 9th century and designated a County.

Interesting sites include the monastery Sant Pere de Rodes, Cadaques as well as the easternmost point on the Spanish mainland the Cap de Creus. The mainline railway from Barcelona to France passes through the area with a major transfer point at Port Bou.

The local economy is based on tourism and winemaking.
