National Fish and Wildlife Foundation established in 1984

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) protects, sustains and restores the wildlife, plants and habitats of the United States. Established by Congress in 1984, the Foundation directs public conservation dollars to critical environmental needs and matches those investments with private contributions.

As one of the largest conservation funders in the nation, NFWF supports hundreds of science-based, results-oriented projects that provide solutions for conservation challenges. Its projects are located in communities from Alaska and Hawaii to the Pacific Northwest, California, the Great Lakes, Long Island Sound, southeastern United States, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and beyond. Birds, freshwater fish, marine and coastal ecosystems, wildlife and habitat are focal areas.

NFWF’s position at the nexus of the public and private conservation communities allows it to bring the strengths of many partners to its undertakings. NFWF works with more than 14 federal agencies, dozens of regional, state and local organizations, leading corporations and philanthropic institutions. Since its founding, it has awarded more than 11,000 grants to 3,800 organizations and leveraged $529 million in federal funds into $1.8 billion for on-the-ground conservation.

As part of its Congressional charter, NFWF also receives, manages and disburses funds that originate from court orders, settlements of legal cases, regulatory permits, licenses, and restoration and mitigation plans. The Foundation works collaboratively to ensure that these funds are applied effectively to conservation projects.
