Tony Samuel (born
November 14 ,1955 ) is the current head football coach forSoutheast Missouri State . Samuel's previous head coaching position was withNew Mexico State University from 1997-2004. He had a 34-57 record which puts him third all-time for wins by an NMSU head coach.Playing career
Samuel played four years at the
University of Nebraska and was a member ofTom Osborne 's first recruiting class. He was a two-year starter atdefensive end , played in fourbowl game s and earned honorable mention All-Big Eight honors as a senior.Early Coaching Career
From 1986 to 1996, Samuel coached the outside
linebackers and rush ends at Nebraska, his alma mater, for legendary head coach Tom Osborne. He mentored six first teamAll-American s and 12 futureNational Football League players, including first-round draft picksBroderick Thomas (1989),Mike Croel (1991),Trev Alberts (1994) andGrant Wistrom (1998). A native of
Trinidad ,West Indies , Samuel moved toJersey City, New Jersey , at the age of 10. He earned his B.S. degree in education from Nebraska in 1981. He is married with five children.
