- Karen Burke
Born in
Brantford, Ontario on November 14, 1961, Karen Burke enteredMcMaster University 's Honours music programme in 1979 and there developed an interest in choral conducting. During her time there, Karen received the Louise E. Bettger Scholarship recognizing excellence in choral work; the Humanities Medal for Special Achievement, and the Hamilton Alumnae Branch Award for outstanding graduating female student upon completion of her Bachelor of Music Degree in 1983. Karen also received the A.R.C.T. Diploma in Piano Teaching from theRoyal Conservatory of Music in 1985.Upon graduation from McMaster, Karen accepted a position as a church music director; co-founded with her husband, Micah Communications Inc., a Gospel music production and publishing company, and established Burke Studios, a private piano teaching studio. In 1988, Karen was instrumental in founding the Toronto Mass Choir. Since its inception, she has also written many original songs for the choir’s recordings and continues as their principal director. Working along with her husband and devoted choral staff, Karen develops the choir’s touring schedules and choral arrangements.
In 2005, Karen became an Assistant Professor in the music department at
York University and leads their newly-established Gospel Choir. She has also served as the Music Director atToronto District Christian High School where she served as the music teacher from 1994 to 2006. She teaches piano privately and is a member of the internationally recognized VoiceCare Network. Karen continues a busy touring schedule with the Toronto Mass Choir.
