January 31 ,1907 inNew York City –December 28 ,1985 inNew York City ) was a jazz trombonist most associated with theswing (genre) . He was praised byBill Watrous among other. One of his first jobs was working withClarence Holiday and towards the end of her life appeared with his daughterBillie Holiday onThe Sound of Jazz [ [http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:mzjqoaqabij9~T1 All Music] ] In the 1960s he was part of the "Jazz Giants" (Wild Bill Davison, Herb Hall, Claude Hopkins, Arvell Shaw and Buzzy Drootin. They toured the U. S. and frequently in Canada where they did some recording for Sackville Records. Towards the end of the 60's he played with an "offshoot" band of the "Jazz Giants" with Herman Autrey replacing Davison, Eddie Gibbs replacing Shaw and Sonny Drootin replacing Claude Hopkins. This band was under the leadership of Buzzy Drootin and was called "Buzzy's Jazz Family".That stated he is probably best known for his work withCount Basie andFletcher Henderson .Notes
