W. Lucy & Co. is a large switchgear and lighting manufacturer based in Thame, Oxfordshire. The company formerly produced steel ball bearings and other industrial equipment.

History

The company was founded by William Lucy in 1765 as a small screw manufacturer. In 1825 it expanded its operations into Jericho, Oxford, where a large factory was built. The company expanded into steel and aluminium components, such as ball bearings, nuts, bolts, screws and fasteners. The company also built components for cars produced at the Cowley Works in Oxford. The company started manufacturing switchgears for power cables, along with power connectors and disconnectors. This has been going for more than 100 years, and is now the company's main business. In the 1930s, the company started manufacturing street lighting equipment, and is now the largest company of its kind in the UK. The company has also diversified into the property market, letting and selling the land on which its large Oxford factory once stood.

Headquarters

The company was based in Oxford and the surrounding area for more than two centuries. In 2005 the company moved the bulk of its operations to Thame, Oxfordshire, in a new multi-million pound factory. The company manufactures the bulk of its products there, and also in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, where it built a large factory in 1997.
