Blackburne House is a building situated in Liverpool, England. It was originally the home of John Blackburne, but has since been used for other purposes.

History

Blackburne House was built between 1785 and 1790 for John Blackburne. Blackburne was Mayor of Liverpool in 1788. In 1874 the house was rebuilt and extended. It was at this time that the Liverpool Institute High School for Girls was established in the building [cite web|title=Blackburne House|url=http://canning.merseyworld.com/bhouse.htm|accessdate=2006-10-12] . The school was commonly referred to as "Blackburne House", rather than its full title.

The school was eventually closed in 1984. Over the next ten years the house was refitted and reopened in 1994 as Blackburne House Centre for Women. Women's Technology and Education Centre rasied funds to transform this beautiful grade 2 listed building into its present day role of transforming women's lives through education.

George Holt, a local philanthropist bought the house in 1844 with the intention that it should accommodate a girls school. The school opened on 5 August 1844, making it the oldest Grammar School for Girls in Liverpool. Two years later the building had to be extended. From 1874 to 1876 a new wing was added, which included the clock tower and the central staircase which links the two buildings together.
