Habo Church

Habo Church

Habo Church ("Habo kyrkan") in Habo Parish, Jönköping District, Sweden, is a unique wooden church building. It received its present appearance in 1723. What is unique about this church is its architecture, which in appearance reminds one of a cathedral, but is built entirely in wood. It is in the form of a basilica, with a high nave and two lower side aisles.

The interior of the church was painted 1741-1743 by two artists from Jönköping, Johan Kinnerius and Johan Christian Peterson. The paintings illustrate Martin Luther’s catechism summary of Christian doctrine.

Habo Church is one of four churches whose pictures were reproduced by the Swedish Post Office Christmas stamps abroad in 2002 under the rubric, "Romantic Churches at Christmas"." The other churches are Kiruna Church in the Norrbotten District, Tensta Bell Tower in north Uppland, and Sundborn Church in Dalarna.
