Gondar Zuria (Amharic "Greater Gondar Area") is one of the 105
woreda s in theAmhara Region ofEthiopia . Part of theSemien Gondar Zone , Gondar Zuria is bordered on the south by theDebub Gondar Zone , on the southwest byLake Tana , on the west by Dembiya, on the north byLay Armachiho , on the northeast by Wegera, and on the southeast byBelessa . Towns and cities in Gondar Zuria includeDegoma ,Emfraz ,Maksenit and Teda. The city and woreda ofGondar is surrounded by Gondar Zuria in the northern part of this woreda.Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 264,920, of whom 130,796 were males and 134,124 were females; 27,136 or 10.24% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 14.1%. With an estimated area of 1,286.76 square kilometers, Gondar Zuria has an estimated population density of 205.9 people per square kilometer, which is greater than the Zone average of 60.23. Amhara people are the predominant ethnic group in this woreda.In May
1771 , theThree battles of Sarbakusa were fought south of Teda within the modern borders of this woreda between RasMikael Sehul and the triumvirate of Fasil,Goshu of Amhara , andWand Bewossen ofBegemder . Ras Mikael was defeated, and his influence over the Emperors atGondar came to an end.Notes
