Alamata is one of the 36
woreda s in theTigray Region ofEthiopia . Part of theDebubawi Zone , Alamata is bordered on the south and west by theAmhara Region , on the northwest byOfla , and on the northeast byRaya Azebo . The administrative center isAlamata ; other towns in Alamata includeWaja .Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 137,189, of whom 69,271 were males and 67,918 were females; 56,161 or 40.94% of its population are urban dwellers, which is greater than the Zone average of 29.1%. With an estimated area of 550.32 square kilometers, Alamata has an estimated population density of 249.3 people per square kilometer, which is greater than the Zone average of 133.18. This woreda was one of the about fifteen most important cotton production areas in Ethiopia in the 1950s, excluding
Eritrea . A joint Ministry of Agriculture-ICA project to improve cotton production in the Alamata district happened in 1954-55.
