Ediacara Hills

Ediacara Hills

Ediacara Hills are a range of low hills in the northern Flinders Ranges of South Australia, around 650 km north of Adelaide. The area has many old copper and silver mines from mining activity in the late 19th century. The hills also contain fossils of early life forms, the Ediacaran biota (lagerstätte), and have given their name to the Ediacaran geological period.

The name "Ediacara" pronEng|iːdiːˈækərə has an unclear origin from one of the Aboriginal languages near the Flinders Range area. [ [http://listserv.linguistlist.org/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0405&L=australian-linguistics-l&D=1&P=264 Re: Ediacaran] ] Either, it comes from "Idiyakra" ("water is present"), or it is a mispronunciation of "Yata Takarra" ("hard/stony ground") [http://aussieheritage.com.au/listings/sa/Parachilna/EdiacaraFossilSite-Nilpena/9895] .
