Allama Prabhu

Allama Prabhu

Allama Prabhu (Kannada:ಅಲ್ಲಮ ಪ್ರಭು ) (1150 CE) was a mystic "Veerashaiva" saint and poet of the 12th century. He was born in the village of Balligavi near present day Shivamogga. He was contemporary to Basavanna and is one of the foremost Veerashaiva saints along with Basavanna and Akka Mahadevi.

Like the other Veerashaiva saints also known as "Sharanas" or "Sharanaru", Allama also composed many Vachanas in the Bhakti tradition. His compositions were in praise of his deity, "Guheshwara".

His insignia is in the name of Guheshwara. Guheshwara means Lord of the mystics. His major vachanas deal mainly with the mysticism of the human mind and Maaye concept. Historians have often quoted this great saint as Maayaa Kolahaliga (Kannada:ಮಾಯಾ ಕೋಲಾಹಲಿಗ ) or creator of catastrophe to illusion (maya).
