- Kjelvik
Kjelvik is a small fishing village in
Nordkapp municipality,Norway . It is located on the island ofMagerøya at approx. coord|71|0|0|N|26|7|0|E a few miles east ofHonningsvåg and near the estuary of thePorsangerfjord .Kjelvik was the original name of Nordkapp municipality. However, the village was totally destroyed by German forces in 1944, never recovering. As a consequence of this the name of the municipality was changed to Nordkapp in 1950. Fact|date=February 2007
The name
The village is first mentioned in 1518 ("Kedelwigh"), but it is probably from Norse times. The first element is "ketill" m 'kettle', the last element is "vík" f 'inlet'. The meaning of the name is then: 'the inlet formed like a kettle'.
