Ependes is a municipality in the district of Sarine in the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. Its former German name was "Spinz".

It was first recorded in 1140 as "Spindes".

The municipality had 275 inhabitants in 1811, which increased to 277 in 1850 and 404 in 1900. It then declined to 347 in 1950 and 340 in 1970. Its territory was enlarged in 1977 with the formerly independent municipality Sales. In 2000 the population was 1034.

The asteroid 129342 Ependes is named in its honour.
