Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Abbreviation: HCMUT) – a member of Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City - us still referred to by many as Phú Thọ, is the leading university in teaching and research activities of Vietnam. The university plays the active role in the fields of talents cultivation and providing manpower with strong technical skills to the Southern areas of Vietnam .

HCMUT is a centre of technology - industry and management training. Graduate students from HCMUT have strong professional skills, which are recognized equivalent to those of other advanced countries in the Southeast Asia . The HCMUT training activities have made remarkable contribution to satisfy the requirements of man power for the industrialization and modernization in Vietnam generally and Southern Vietnam areas particularly. Moreover, HCMUT is also the science research and technology transfer center which plays the key role in providing information and applying advanced technologies of developed countries and transferring to concerning industries in the Southern areas of Vietnam .

Up to May 2005, HCMUT has 11 faculties, 10 science research and industry transferring centers, 4 training centers, 10 functioning offices and one limited company. During the past 30 years since the Liberation of South Vietnam and country unification, 45,000 engineers and Bachelors have graduated from our university. Since 1994, we have trained 20,000 Bachelors of Science, 1,503 Masters and 25 Doctors, many of whom are either keeping management roles and or leading experts in state-owned or foreign-investment enterprises of different industries in Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces.

History

*1950s: established on June 29, 1957, the university was known as Phú Thọ National Center of Technology. The center included 4 partner colleges: College of Civil Engineering, College of Electricity Power, Vietnam National Maritime Engineering.

*1960s: College of Chemistry was established, belonging to Phu Tho National Center of Technology.

*1970s: In 1972, Phu Tho National Center of Technology was renamed as National Institute of Technology, which was the only center of South Vietnam to train technical engineers and experts.According to the decree 010/SL/VNGDTN signed on January 11, 1974, the National Institute of Technology was merged into Thu Duc Institute of Polytechnique and renamed as University of Technology. In the same year, Thanh Hoa Post Graduate Department (the current Environmental Engineering Faculty) was established in the College of Civil Engineering. It was the first time when the university conducted post graduate training program. After the national reunification, the university was renamed as Ho Chi Minh City University of Polytechnique as Saigon was renamed to Ho Chi Minh City (according to the Decision 426/Ttg signed by The President of the Cabinet on October 2, 1976). Being one of the three largest universities of technology in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City University of Polytechnique has the mission of training engineers majoring in the fields of capital construction, industry, resources exploration and exploitation, and environment preservation to provide a force of manpower mainly for the southern areas of Vietnam.

*1980s: Since 1981, HCMUT has expanded its scope into postgraduate training. In 1990, HCMUT opened the Master degree training system. Actually, the postgraduate training in HCMUT has been focused since 1981.

*1990s: According to decision 16/CP by The Prime Minister on January 17, 1995, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) was founded. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology became one among the 9 members of VNU-HCM and was renamed as University of Technology.

*2000s: According to decision 15/2001/QĐ-TTG and decision 16/2001/QĐ-TTg by The Prime Minister on December 2, 2001, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City was reorganized with 3 members and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology gained back its traditional name as University of Polytechnique.
