For many years WMAP was a 1000-watt station in
Monroe, North Carolina . The station added an FM frequency at 102.3 [Gene Stowe, "Monroe's WMAP Radio Picks Up S.C. Station", "The Charlotte Observer",June 24 ,1989 .] , but later separated from that station and eventually went off the air. Then it was known as WKRE [Steve Lyttle, "New Radio Station Will Slip Into Old Spot on the Dial", "The Charlotte Observer",March 21 ,1997 .] before the move to Charlotte, which included a signal increase to 5000 watts. After the move to Charlotte, WXNC was a talk station known as The Conversation Station. The announcement was made that WXNC would also be heard on WKMT at 1220 AM, also owned by Kevin and Kris Geddings. [Mark Washburn, "New Station Offers a Different Sort of Talk - AM Format Focuses on Lifestyle Programming", "The Charlotte Observer",
January 14 ,2005 .] ButNorsan Group bought WXNC and the station soon changed to its current format and began its simulcast with WGSP.
