Richard Dauenhauer is an American poet and translator who has married into, and become an expert on, the
Tlingit nation of southeasternAlaska . His wife is the Tlingit poet and scholarNora Marks Dauenhauer .He earned his Ph.D. in 1975 from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison , with a dissertation titled "Text and Context of Tlingit Oral Tradition."He is a former poet laureate of Alaska.
Together the Dauenhauers are the editors of the
Sealaska Heritage Foundation 's highly regarded "Classics of Tlingit Oral Literature" series.Works
