Oral Tradition Journal

"Oral Tradition" is an academic journal founded in 1986 by John Miles Foley and seeks to provide a comparative and interdisciplinary focus for studies in oral tradition and related fields by publishing research and scholarship on the creation, transmission, and interpretation of all forms of oral tradition and expression. As well as essays treating certifiably oral traditions, "OT" presents investigations of the relationships between oral and written traditions, as well as brief accounts of important fieldwork, a Symposium section (in which scholars may reply at some length to prior essays), review articles, occasional transcriptions and translations of oral texts, a digest of work in progress, and a regular column for notices of conferences and other matters of interest. "Oral Tradition" spans a number of academic fields and disciplines: Folklore, Cultural Anthropology, Social Anthropology, Ethnography, Ethnomusicology, English, Romance Languages, Linguistics, Classics, Comparative Literature, and more.

Publication History

From its foundation in 1986, through the end of 2006, "OT" was published by Slavica Publishers, with an additional online edition through Project Muse from 2003 onward. However, both of these publication venues are subscription-based, and for that reason they unavoidably excluded a substantial segment of "OT"’s potential readership, particularly non-western academics and institutions.

As a result, beginning in September 2006, "Oral Tradition" became available electronically at [http://journal.oraltradition.org/ http://journal.oraltradition.org] , completely free of charge, with no subscription required. All journal articles from this point onward will be published exclusively online, but all back print issues will ultimately become available as well.

With the advent of "eOT", many of the natural barriers created by print-based and subscription media are removed. The creator of "eOT", John Miles Foley, and those at the [http://www.oraltradition.org/ Center for Studies in Oral Tradition] share the conviction that academic contributions should be as democratically available as possible, and that the journal should be offered as a pro bono, gratis contribution to the field and that anyone with a connection to the internet should be able to read and redistribute its contents.

In addition to reaching a much larger and more diverse readership, "eOT" also hopes to encourage submissions from scholars whose voices are not customarily heard in western print media because of the difficulties involved with currency exchange and distribution networks.
