BabyCenter L.L.C. is owned by Johnson & Johnson, the main sponsor on the site. BabyCenter has a policy of maintaining a clear separation between advertising content and medically approved health content. Users of the website can sign up for free weekly email 'stageletters' that guide them through their pregnancy and the first three years of their child's life.

BabyCenter was the winner of the 'Best family and parenting site' category in the 2006 Webby Awards.

Other competing sites exist, such as PeaTot.com, LilaGuide.com, and iVillage.

BabyCenter was purchased from the now defunct eToys in a cash agreement valued at approximately $10 million dollars in March 2001.
