Alan Vaughan Lowe
QC (born 1952) is a leadingbarrister andacademic specialising in the field ofinternational law . He has beenChichele Professor of Public International Law in theUniversity of Oxford , and a Fellow ofAll Souls College, Oxford , since 1999. He was called to theBar of England and Wales atGray's Inn in 1993 and appointedQueen's Counsel on28 March 2008. Associé de l'Institut de droit international since 2005.Lowe was educated at
Cardiff University where he graduated with the degrees ofLL.B. (1973),LL.M. (1978), andPh.D. (1980). He also holds degrees from theUniversity of Cambridge (M.A. 1991), where he was Reader in International Law and a Fellow ofCorpus Christi College (1988-1999), and theUniversity of Oxford (M.A. 1999) where he has beenChichele Professor of Public International Law since 1999.Prior to his appointment at the
University of Oxford , he taught at the Universities of Cardiff, Manchester, and Cambridge.His academic writings include "The Law of the Sea", (with Robin Churchill) and "The Settlement of International Disputes", (with John Collier). He is co-editor of the "British Year Book of International Law" and general editor of the "Oxford Monographs in International Law."
Lowe practises as a
barrister fromEssex Court Chambers , 24 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, mainly in the field ofinternational law . His notable appointments include the arbitral tribunals in the cases of "Barbados v. Trinidad & Tobago maritime delimitation" (2006) (as party-appointed arbitrator), and "Bayview v United Mexican States" (ICSID, 2006-) (as President of tribunal), and theEuropean Nuclear Energy Tribunal (2006- ) (as a judge, nominated by the UK).Cases
