"Heaven Beside You" was written and mostly sung by guitarist Jerry Cantrell, which is somewhat unusual due to the fact that Layne Staley was typically the band's lead vocalist. "Heaven Beside You" is a mid-tempo song that contrasts the general overall "heaviness" of AIC's eponymous album.

The song later appeared on their "Greatest Hits" album in 2001 and "The Essential Alice in Chains" album in 2006. An acoustic version also appeared on their MTV "Unplugged" album in 1996.

Chart Performance

"Heaven Beside You" peaked at #52 on the Hot 100, making it Alice in Chains' second-highest charting single after "No Excuses." The song also peaked at #3 on the Mainstream Rock Chart and #6 on the Modern Rock Chart. "Heaven Beside You" also peaked at #35 on the UK charts.
