Irob is one of the 36
woreda s in theTigray Region ofEthiopia . This woreda is named after theIrob people , who are the predominant ethnic group living there. Located in theMisraqawi Zone at the eastern escarpment of theEthiopian highlands , Irob is bordered on the south bySaesi Tsaedaemba , on the west byGulomahda , on the north and east byEritrea , and on the southeast by theAfar Region . The administrative center for this woreda isAlitena .The highest point in this woreda is
Mount Asimba (3,250 meters).Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 23,663, of whom 12,216 were males and 11,447 were females; 857 or 3.62% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 19.6%. With an estimated area of 933.45 square kilometers, Irob has an estimated population density of 25.4 people per square kilometer, which is less than the Zone average of 141.59.
