William Collins (painter)

William Collins (painter)

William Collins (1788-1847) was a British landscape and genre painter. Collins was a highly successful artist, whose work was better known in his day than that of his rival John Constable. He studied art with George Morland, and began to exhibit work at the RA in 1807. He continued to do so almost every year from 1807 until 1846. He was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1814 and became a full member in 1820. He exhibited regularly at the Academy Summer Exhibition. He was the father of the novelist Wilkie Collins, who wrote a biography, "Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A.", published in 1848. His younger son, Charles Allston Collins, was also an artist.
