Aarno Lamminparras

Aarno Lamminparras (born 1941 in Sodankylä, Finland) is a Finnish businessman who committed Finland's first aircraft hijacking on September 30, 1978.

37-year-old Lamminparras hijacked Finnair's Super Caravelle plane on the way from Oulu to Helsinki. 44 passengers were on board.

Armed with a pistol, Lamminparras first demanded the plane go back to the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, where he released all 44 passengers. After this the plane flew back to Oulu, where he was paid a ransom of 675,000 Finnish marks (about 112,500 euros) that he had demanded earlier. Then the plane went back to Helsinki, where he released the rest of the passengers and ordered the plane to fly to Amsterdam, Netherlands. After this, the plane flew back to Oulu. After the incident, Lamminparras went to his home, where police arrested him on October 1.

Lamminparras was sentenced to seven years and one month in prison. "Non compos mentis" found him partially insane.

He currently resides in Sweden.
