John K. Reed

John Reed is a senior scientist in the Biomedical Marine Research group at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution. He has been instrumental to the success of the group by organizing and participating in numerous research cruises worldwide collecting marine organisms for pharmaceutically active compounds. He is most well-known for his research on the deep-water "Oculina" coral banks off the eastern coast of Florida. He has studied these banks since the 1970's resulting in more than 100 publications and the establishment of a 300-square-mile Marine Protected Area.

He has participated in countless research expeditions using both SCUBA and the submersible to collect marine organisms as well as document the habitat. This has led him to travel to more than 60 countries.
