Founding
Elsa Kopp opened the first Kopp's stand at 6005 W. Appleton Ave., Milwaukee, WI (now the site of
Robert's Frozen Custard ) in 1950. A Germanimmigrant with no prior business experience, Kopp started the stand after her husband, Karl Kopp, developedParkinson's disease .Some support in starting the business came from Leon Schneider, a custard machine repairman (later the founder of
Leon's Frozen Custard ), whom Elsa Kopp had met while working at a bakery. The Kopp's frozen custard stand rose in popularity quickly during the 1950's and was soon seen as a Milwaukee staple. [ [http://www.shepherd-express.com/7_28_05/noize_eatdrink.htm Custard Cool-Off] , "Shepherd Express"]
Flavor of the Day
By 1960 the Kopp's stand had become a great success. It was then that Elsa started further "tweaking" her frozen custard recipes. Initially it was the chocolate and vanilla (tampering with the traditional vanilla was often regarded as "heresy" to the early frozen custard community.) Next came a revolution in the industry as Kopp's began offering special, new flavor concoctions referred to as the "flavor of the day".
