:1 Vaucluse Liberal MLA Ray Aston died on May 23, 1988. Liberal candidate Michael Yabsley, the then-recently defeated member for Bligh, was elected unopposed as his replacement on June 6.:2 North Shore independent MLA Ted Mack resigned on September 16, 1988. Independent candidate Robyn Read won the resulting by-election on November 5.:3 Bob Martin was initially declared elected as the ALP member for Port Stephens, but had his election voided by the Court of Disputed Returns on September 19, 1988. Martin then won the resulting by-election on November 5.:4 Wallsend ALP MLA Ken Booth died on November 2, 1988. Liberal candidate Tony Packard won the resulting by-election on September 1.:10 Coffs Harbour National MLA Matt Singleton resigned on September 11, 1990.
