Mian or miah (Bengali, Punjabi and Urdu: میاں) is family name and a title of nobility and used by Muslims in the Punjab, Bengal and other part of South Asia.
Mian or Miah is used for the leaders of Arain tribe of Sub - Continent. The Arain Mian family is a Pakistani noble family. The following family has enjoyed a prominent role in Pakistani politics since the days of the Mughal Empire. On record this family is the only one which officially received Royal title of Mian from Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for their prominent contributions in the region. This family is also popularly known as the Mian Family Baghbanpura in Pakistan.[1] Mian is also used by the member of Arain tribe who migrated from Eastern Punjab districts such as Amritsar, Jhullandhar, Gurdaspur and Ferozpur. In Lahore and Multan there is a significant population of Arains is present and they also used the title of Mian or Miah.
It can be used to mean a variety of men in notable positions, including Sardar, or more informally for an owner, or a respectable and honorable man or husband. It is also a hereditary title for a group of Muslim Rajput clans from the Hill states of South Asia the including Himanchal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, hence Miah is are Muslim's from Muslim Rajput and Khatri and Sylhet origins. After the advent of Islam, most of these clans were converted to Islam but have continued to use Miah as a surname.
In Bangladesh, it was used by mainly the Zamidar family of different part of the country, it was also used by the Sufi. Present day their family hold this title as a sign of nobility.
