Edward Olin Davenport Downes (
August 12 ,1911 -December 26 ,2001 ) was an Americanmusicologist , music critic, and quizmaster.Born in
West Roxbury, Massachusetts , the son ofOlin Downes , at one time music critic of TheBoston Evening Transcript and chief music critic ofThe New York Times , Downes was educated atColumbia University and theManhattan School of Music and received a Ph.D. in musicology fromHarvard University in 1958. He taught atWellesley College , theLongy School of Music , theUniversity of Minnesota . Much of the end of his career was as a professor atQueens College and the Graduate Center of theCity University of New York , where he taught and advised doctoral students.He was also a New York Times music critic for two years in the 1950s and wrote programme notes for the
New York Philharmonic for eighteen years.He is perhaps best remembered as the host and quizmaster of the
Metropolitan Opera Quiz for most of its existence, on its Saturday afternoon broadcasts from 1958 to 1996.Works
