Roadside America ] ] It was erected in September 2004. The statue is located in front of Solid Rock Church, a 3000+ member megachurch in Monroe.

The statue was designed by Brad Coriel and was sculpted by James Lynch.

Comedian Heywood Banks wrote and performed a song about the statue entitled "Big Butter Jesus," which encourages all to "Spread" the Word. The name of the song references the statue's pale yellow color, and states that it looks like it's carved out of butter. This reminded Heywood of seeing big statues at the state fair that were made out of different food items.
