Ramazan Beg

Ramazan Beg

Ramazan Beg was a Turkish emirate which ruled territory around Adana from 1352 to 1608.

Ramazan Beg, from Yuregir Clan of Oghuz Turks founded Ramazan and made Elbistan the capital. After the conquest of Elbistan by Emirate Of Dulkadir, the capital is moved to Adana. Emirate of Ramazan, lived for 256 years but he lived as a vassal of Ottomans in his last 92 years.

Because of the Mongol invasion Üçok Turkmens moved to Anatolia in great numbers. These Turkmens were every time soldiers and they kept fighting against Mongols. So they could not find a place to make homeland in Anatolia because they did not obey the Mongols. After all those Turkmens moved to Syria and there Baibars, the sultan of Mameluks made those nomads stay and gave them the right to settle from Antioch to Gazze. Turkmens became a great help in Baibars' battles against Crusaders and Mongols.

As a result of Ebu Said Bahadir Khan's death, Üçok Turkmens turned their eyes on Cilicia andthey started to settle the provinces which they capture. Meanwhile Ramazan Beg was the leader of Ramazans. By the help of Mameluks in 1360 Adana and Tarsus were captured. And by that time only a few castles were left to Armenians.

After the death of Ramazan Beg, his son Ibrahim Beg made alliance with Karaman Emirate. Alaeddin Beg and Ibrahim Beg together tried to break the Mameluks' might in the province. After this alliance a great Mameluk army moved to provinces of Turkmens and began to plunder the province but Ibrahim Beg's army had achieved a great victory against Mameluks in Belen. Also in this battle Temur Bay, the general of Mameluks had been captured by Turkmens. Yilboga, the amir of Aleppo moved on to Turkmens after this defeat and he conquered Misis Castle. Ibrahim Beg fell back to Sis but it was an Armenian province and Armenians captured him. Then he was given to Mameluks. Quickly, Yilboga wanted Ibrahim Beg, his brother Kara Mehmed and his mother to die. After death of Ibrahim Beg, Yüregirs wanted to take revenge and attacked Yilboga at the pass of Saruca-Sam. Yilboga was wounded from his eye and he was lost in the field. Because of this Mameluk army's disciple was broken and they started to flee. Yüregirs took this opportunity and then attempted many attack in those provinces against Mameluks. When Mameluks returned to Aleppo, there were only a few hundred men left.
