Formerly, the name "Aplocheilidae" was used for theAplocheiloidei as a whole, i.e. including theNothobranchiidae ofAfrica and the mainlySouth America nRivulidae assubfamilies . This obsolete system is sometimes still seen, e.g. inITIS .They are small
killifish , usually measuring about 5 centimeters in length. Species are found southernAsia , andMadagascar . They live infresh water but are somewhat salt-tolerant. They are also found in muddy or brackish water. Some species are kept as aquarium pets.There are a mere two
genera remaining in the family today:
