updated= August 27, 2008Papyrus (1920-1941) was a British
Thoroughbred racehorse bred inIreland . Out of the mare Miss Matty, he was sired by Tracery whose sire wasRock Sand .In 1923, Papyrus won England's most prestigious race, the
Epsom Derby , and finished 2nd in theSt. Leger Stakes . However, for American racing fans he is best remembered for his 1923match race withKentucky Derby winner Zev. Papyrus was shipped by ocean vessel with his own special feed mix, his stablemate Bargold, his stablecat , two stable boys, his trainer, andjockey Steve Donoghue . Racing on a dirt track for the first time and in heavy mud atBelmont Park without mud calks, Papyrus was beaten by five lengths. The match race was a tool to boost American racing which at the time was going through a bad patch. Terms of the match were to allow Zev to come upsides the derby champion and that is what Donoghue did but in a short while Zev kicked on, Papyrus then got covered in dirt and try as he did, never got back on terms.As a sire
Retired to stud duty, Papyrus sired Osiris who won several stakes races in England then stood at stud in
Canada where he was the Leading sire in 1938, 1940, 1942, and 1947. As well, Papyrus was the damsire ofPrincequillo who in turned sired a number of important Thoroughbreds and was the grandfather of Secretariat. Other descendants from Papyrus includesShergar .References
