Tarare (opera)

Tarare (opera)

"Tarare" is an opera by Antonio Salieri, after a play by Beaumarchais. It was first performed in Paris on June 8, 1787. Salieri also reworked the material into an Italian version retitled "Axur, re d'Ormus" with libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, which opened in Vienna in January 1788.

The finale of "Axur" appears in the 1984 film "Amadeus." The film is incorrect in presenting "Axur" as being performed immediately after Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" and before the premiere of "Don Giovanni"; in fact "Don Giovanni" appeared first, in the fall of 1787.
