Fredrick Barthelme (born October 10, 1943) is an American
author of short fiction andnovel s and a professor atThe University of Southern Mississippi . He is also the editor of the literary journal "Mississippi Review".Early life
He received his M.A. in
creative writing fromJohns Hopkins University , where he studied with the writerJohn Barth . His brothers Donald and Steven are also authors. His father, Donald Barthelme, Sr., was a well-known Modernist architect in Houston. Barthelme was also a founding member of the avant-garde psychedelic rock bandThe Red Krayola .tyle
Barthelme's works are known for their focus on the landscape of the
New South . He has been labeled a minimalist alongside other writers likeRaymond Carver ,Ann Beattie , andAmy Hempel , and has also been branded with labels like "dirty realist" or "K-mart realist." He published his firstshort story in "The New Yorker " and has claimed that arotisserie chicken helped him understand that he needed to write about ordinary people. He's moved away from thepostmodern stylings of his older brother,Donald Barthelme , though his influence can be seen in Barthelme's earliest works, "Rangoon" and "War and War."Works
Barthelme is the editor of
Mississippi Review which publishedLarry Brown ,Curtis Sittenfeld ,Amy Hempel , and others early in their careers. Issues ofMississippi Review have been guest-edited byRick Moody andMary Robison among others.Barthelme's novel, "Elroy Nights", was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner award, and many of his stories have appeared in the annual anthology "New Stories from the South".
