officialname=The 141 TC, or "141 TC Ouest", was2-8-2 tank engine of theChemin de Fer de l'État .Overview
This series of 20 engines, numbered 42-001 to 42-021, was built by
Fives Lille and was allocated to theBâtignoles engine shed . Although they were designed in 1913, production was delayed byWorld War I until 1923, when theChemin de Fer de l'État took delivery. They were designed to serve in the western suburbs ofParis . In 1930, the engines were equipped with remote driving. The driver could operate the engine from the driving cabin of aVoiture État à 2 étages carriage at the other end of the train, using compressed-air pipes. This saved much time at terminals. The engines were modified, primarily with the addition of asmoke deflector and a closed cab.The electrification of the
Réseau Saint-Lazare moved the engines toBrittany . The last of the series were allocated to the St-Brieuxengine shed and rented to theCTFA after the replacement of the track on the lines toCarhaix andPaimpol and change of the gauge tostandard gauge . The last 141 TC served in 1971 and the 141 TC 19 was preserved by theAJECTA .The 141s were renumbered 3.141TC 1 to 20 by the
SNCF in 1938.Design
Studies were led in parallel with the one of the 140 C. The 141 were of simple expansion with two cylinders and possessed the powerful fireboxes the 140 C. although the firboxes were excellent, the rest was of average quality with cylinders particularly of small diametre (25 cm). The
Chemin de Fer de l'État chose small wheels as to give the engines the capacity to start up quickly. The railway company was very satisfied with the engines as they were capable of hauling the heavy metallic coaches.
