It is acytochrome -,oxidase - andcatalase -negative organism that is nonmotile, non-spore forming andhomofermentative . Streptococcus thermophilus is an alpha-hemolytic species of the viridans group. It is also classified as a lactic acid bacterium (LAB). "Streptococcus thermophilus" is found in milk and milk products. It is not aprobiotic (it does not survive the stomach) and generally used in the production ofyogurt .
