- Beatrice Tinsley
Beatrice Muriel Hill Tinsley (
January 27 ,1941 -March 23 ,1981 ) was aNew Zealand astronomer andcosmologist whose research made fundamental contributions to our understanding of howgalaxies evolve with time.In 1974 she received the
Annie J. Cannon Award in Astronomy . Theasteroid 3087 Beatrice Tinsley is also named after her.AAS Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize
In 1986 the American Astronomical Society established the
Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize for outstanding creative contributions to astronomy or astrophysics.Tributes
In 2005, the
Circa Theatre produced a play calledBright Star , about the life of Beatrice Tinsley. TheWellington Astronomical Society held telescope viewing sessions outside the theatre, on the wharf next to Te Papa.Publications
