A Liberal Party of Canada leadership convention was called to replace retiring Liberal leader and sitting Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. On the first ballot, External Affairs minister Louis St. Laurent defeated Agriculture minister James G. Gardiner and former cabinet minister Charles "Chubby" Power.
