Donald C. Martin Observatory

Originally owned by Leo Henzl, it was purchased by the Ohio Valley Astronomical Society (OVAS) and the Huntington Museum of Art. The observatory was named for longtime physics professor Donald C. Martin who died in 1976. The Huntington Museum of Art had several problems with the observatory on the roof so they donated it to the Cabell County Board of Education to be placed on site at Huntington High School. Since then the observatory has been host to monthly public star "parties" sponsored by the Ohio Valley Astronomical Society. These observing sessions are on the first Saturday of each month and are free and open to the public. The public stargazes begin at dark, and require clear skies. For more info on these public stargazes contact Larry Oyster who teaches at Huntington High and holds the events. The observatory can be seen while driving on No. 1 Highlander Way up to the school.
