King Porter Stomp

King Porter Stomp

King Porter Stomp is a tune by Jelly Roll Morton.

Morton himself first recorded the number in 1923 as a piano solo. He did not file a copyright on the tune until the following year. Also in 1924 Morton recorded a duet of the number with Joe "King" Oliver on cornet. Morton said that he had actually written the number almost 20 years earlier, and that it was named after his friend fellow pianist Porter King.

Benny Goodman and his orchestra recorded an arrangement of the number by Fletcher Henderson in 1935 which became a huge hit, and the number became a standard of the Big Band era.

Late 60s "space-age" bandleader Pat Williams recorded the song on his 1968 Verve LP "Shades Of Today".
