Hanging in the air

Hanging in the air

Hanging in the air is a military term developed during the era in which armies still engaged each other on a single battlefield. The term indicates that the flank of an army is exposed to attack. To have a wing "hanging in the air" was to invite a counter attack along the exposed flank.
