Fictional Biography

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End"

Captain Teague is the father of Captain Jack Sparrow. Little is known about him other than he may have been born in British Colonial India, the same place as Jack, and may have once been employed by the East India Trading Company. Captain Teague is the former Pirate Lord of Madagascar, but he resigned to become the keeper of the Pirate Code. He firmly believes that the pirate code is law and will shoot any man who claims otherwise. He appears to be feared, if not respected, amongst the pirate lords, as they immediately fall silent when his name is called to bring forth the Codex. Teague can mute any pirate lord with a mere glance and shoots anyone who disputes the code. Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean "New Visual Guide" states that Teague is the Keeper of the Code, and it may only be summoned when a pirate lord demands it.

After presenting the Pirate Codex to the Fourth Brethren Court, he sits down, seemingly bored, and starts playing a guitar (a reference to his portrayer, Rolling Stones band member, Keith Richards). When Jack approaches Teague following the meeting, it is revealed that Teague is Jack's father. In response to Jack's inquiry about his mother, Teague shows him a shrunken head attached to his belt. Jack nervously replies, "She looks great!" Teague warns Jack against searching for immortality, saying that living forever is a curse if one cannot live with the consequence of one's actions.

Despite his gruff demeanor, Teague affectionately calls his son "Jackie". Although Jack is obviously unnerved while in his father's presence, it should be noted that he was much more comfortable around Teague than the other Pirate Lords were. Teague's appearance is similar to his son, complete with long, black dreadlocks and an ambiguous facial expression, suggesting that he, too, likes rum as much as Jack. Captain Teague is seen one last time when, after the victory against Cutler Beckett and the East India Trading Company, the pirate lords and their crews toss their hats into the air in celebration.

Teague's crew appears to be comprised of old pirates. Two ancient pirates are shown bringing him the Pirata Codex, and are also seen when he is aboard the ship following the pirates' victory over Lord Beckett.

Captain Teague also seems to be the new master of the jail house dog that (in "Dead Man's Chest") was last seen on Pelegosto Island being worshiped as a god and about to be devoured by the natives. Teague explains the dog's apparent escape to Pintel and Ragetti by merely shrugging his shoulders and commenting, "Sea turtles, mate." This is a reference to Jack's tall tale of how he escaped the desert island Captain Barbossa once marooned him on.
