It was created on January 1, 1999 as a result of the Local Government Reorganization Act of 1998. Its administrative seat and only town is Proszowice, which lies convert|31|km|mi|0 north-east of the regional capital Kraków.

The county covers an area of convert|414.57|km2|sqmi|1. As of 2006 its total population is 43,441, out of which the population of Proszowice is 6,205 and the rural population is 37,236.

Neighbouring counties

Proszowice County is bordered by Kazimierza County and Tarnów County to the east, Brzesko County to the south-east, Bochnia County to the south, Kraków County to the south and west, and Miechów County to the north-west.
