Cobalescou Island (coord|64|11|S|61|39|W|) is a small snow-free
island with two rounded summits, lying 1 mile southeast ofTwo Hummock Island in thePalmer Archipelago . Discovered and named by theBelgian Antarctic Expedition under Gerlache, 1897-99. The established name appears to be a corrupted spelling. The toponym was suggested to Gerlache byEmil Racovitza , Romanian zoologist and botanist of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, for Romanian scholarGrigore Cobalcescu , a geologist of European reputation.
