Biju is a popular male name in India, especially southern states like Kerala. The most common meaning associated with this name is the French word "bijou", "viz" "Jewel" in French. Film maker Biju Viswanath, Actor Biju Menon, national swimming champion Susmita Shenoi's husband Biju Kumar and Scholar C.S.Biju are a few wellknown people with the name Biju.

However, from an Indian context "Biju" is probably a name derived from a similarly rhyming name "Viju". In eastern Indian states such as West Bengal and Orissa, "B" is very often phonetically substituted for "V". It is highly likely that "Viju" itself is an affectionate version of the name "Vijay" which means "Victory" in Sanskrit and several Indian languages. Vijay is a synonum for Arjuna in Mahabharatha and Vijay and consequently Biju hints at this great warrior

Similar names, without any meaning, have arisen from this name such as Riju, Tiju, Liju, Jiju, Shiju, and even Iju (pronEng|aɪdʒuː).
