Ameland , one of theWest Frisian Islands and part ofthe Netherlands . It is situated on the westernmost part of the island.Prominent in the town is a
Reformed church with foundations from the 12th century and alighthouse , which is 59 m high, dating from 1880. Also a notable feature are the "Commandeur huuskes". "Commandeur" refers to the captain of awhaling boat, as were used during the 18th century to hunt in the southern regions of theArctic Ocean .Also a notable tourist attraction is the history museum in the town called "het Sorgdragersmuseum".
