La Revue de la Cinémathèque Québecoise (Sept-Dec. 2007)by Domique Dugas "Volatile Works is without a doubt a creature of its own time! This Montreal underground film collective is made up of five active members brought together by elective affinities rooted in an ethic of artistic and political expression. Swimming in a culture of DIY, interdisciplinarity, community engagement and alternative networking, these five thieves (Allan Brown, called Witkacy; Brad Colbourne called Urchin; Mario DeGiglio-Bellemare; Glenn Gear called Lou; and Tamara Vukov called pomgrenade) do not get caught up in restrictive boundaries. They navigate admirably between celluloid and video, abstract experimentation and genre narrative, French and English cultures, poetics and politics, animation and 'real' POVs, cinema and new medias. Going beyond collective undertakings were collectivism can often stomp out individuality, Volatile Works is composed of five very strong and distinct signatures, from Witcaky’s experimental films that cross avant-garde accents with surrealism, to DeGiglio-Bellemare’s B-movie and horror explorations seasoned with agitprop perspectives, to pomgrenade’s anti-militarism and politically engaged cinema" (Translated from the French).
